Sticks Asleep
Balloon Game with Steps - emphasizes playing one note on time.
Boom Boom- Do what you want - addresses doing what is expected vs playing what you feel like playing.
Conducted start and stop rumbles.
Level 1: Wave - Pass one Note around the Circle
Be sure there is enough energy, focus and good will in the group to attempt this game. "Are you guys ready for a challenge?". If there is a reasonable enthusiastic response, we go for it. If not, I might go with an energy building game.
Sitting in a well formed circle so that everyone can see each other, "Here is our challenge; I am going to play one note, (demonstrate one note) you can play with one stick or two, but it has to be one note. Then I am going to pass the note to (-name of person next to me) I am going to turn my head and use my eyes to make it clear that I am passing the note. She will play a note. Then she will pass it to the person next to her. who will you look at (prompt for her to say the name of the person next to her) and continue this pattern all around the circle back to the me".
Our job is to get the Note all the way around the circle. If the passing is getting stuck remember to acknowledge and energize those people that are attentive and on task. Trouble shoot if people are not paying attention and miss their note, or if they play extra notes or play when not their turn.
'Take over the problem' Reflect and assess- "Did we succeed? Did we get the note all the way around the circle?" "How did we did we do it?"
If you succeed, be sure to acknowledge that and 'spot weld it'
Call "Celebration Rhythm"
Glitches:
Level 2: Wave - Selected Student Calls 'Switch'. Wave goes in the opposite direction.
This level gives the opportunity to engage a person by giving them a special role. I generally don't pick someone who has been disruptive but rather someone who is still more outside the circle. "Student X- can I give you a special job?"
This overture can create a little interesting drama. Usual answers are, 'yes' or 'no' or 'tell me more'. Once they have agreed to the role, "you start the wave, as it moves around the circle, in a use a clear strong voice and say 'call a switch'". "How did we did we do it?" If you succeed, be sure to acknowledge that and 'spot weld it' "Did we succeed? Did we get the note all the way around the circle?" "Celebration Rhythm"
Glitches:
Level 3: Wave - Pass is on or Pass it Back.
A student receives the note. S/he has the choice to pass note back to the person who passed it or pass it on to the next person in the circle.
Glitches:
Level 4: Wave - Pass a Note, or 'Phrase' or 'Rumble' to anyone in the circle. They pass it to someone else in the circle.
This level requires a student to really work together, to:
give clear signals to each other, to pay attention
to each other.
And to have some awareness if each group member is
being included or overly favored.
I like to point out that we have made it through two levels successfully and that we are moving to a harder challenge. Define what to play. A single
note, a particular phrase, a rumble or you can leave it up to the player. You can also have the group decide what figure they want to pass around.
"what the sound is passed to you, play your note,
then,Using your eyes and body language pass the
note to someone else in the group." "How did we
did we do?" Reflecting on this game can quickly
escalate to direct blame and personal attacks.
Clear structure and expectations need to be held. If you succeed, be sure to acknowledge that and 'spot weld it' "Did we succeed? Did we get the
note all the way around the circle?" "Celebration Rhythm"
Glitches:
Level 5: Wave - Pass a Phrase Next Player Changes It.
Player 'A' plays a phrase. 'A' passes to 'B'. A and B play that phrase together. A stops B continues. B changes the Phrase to a differant phrase. B passes it to C. C plays phrase with B. B Stops. C then changes to a different phrase.
Glitches:
Level 6: Wave - Pass Boom - Chick, Boom - Chick around the Circle Keeping Time.
First student plays 'Boom, Chick, Boom, Chick'. Then the next student in the circle plays with keeping seemless time from the last player. Work to get the beat all the way around the circle without a glitch.
Level 7: Wave - Pass Pattern Around The Circle, All Play The Downbeat.
Level 8: Wave - Chaining- Pass Pattern, Share Downbeat.
This is like Level 7 Pass Pattern Around The Circle, All Play The Downbeat, except instead of the whole group playing the downbeat, only the two people next to each other play that downbeat. This challenges these two players to work together.
Level 9: Wave - Pass an Imaginary ball
Around The Circle Everyone Else Plays A Rumble While The
Ball Is In The Air.
Glitches:
Level 10: Wave - with 4 Beats of Time.
Glitches:
Safety- There is an order to the game.
Novelty-
Connection- in passing the note students are in
encouraged to interact, to give clear cueing and to
make eye contact.
Contribution - this game gives opportunities for
student to make contributions to the group by their
making sure other students get their turns.
[science of cueing.]
What happens between people? How do they interact? (Are these interactions Meeting? Beating? Dead Fish?)
