About:

[modulating and controlling force] Taiko is a very deep and powerful drumming tradition.
This game is a small way to introduce students to this particular style. This could be a way to begin a discussion of how a tradition can emerge as part of an culture.

Purpose of this Lesson:

Learn to support the voice to be powerful and not hurt the throat or vocal cords.

Directions:

Call 'Sticks Asleep'.

The left hand will play steady 8 beats. The right hand will slowly lift. On beat 8, the stick has a small flick where it will point straight up. On 'One' hit the drum and make a Kia!

The emphasis is on the group of players staying together as they lift their sticks. The Kia! is to be strong and well support, not yelling with tension in the throat.
