Rhythm Squares On The Board

About:

A student can have great satisfaction in being able to read and write music.

If we jump in and start to teach music patterns by reading them, it will work for some students and we will loose some. If we have done the earlier steps well of walking rhythm squares and playing the notes on them, then translating that learning reading and writing notes on a white board is easy.

Purpose of this lesson:

Student learn to play a written pattern and students learn to write a pattern.

Preliminaries:

Walking Rhythm Squares

Walking Rhythm Squares Adding Tones

Count off to a start ( 1, 2, Ready, Go)

Celebration Rhythm

Materials:

White Board or Chalk Board

Directions:

Now that we have played some rhythms Walking the Rhythm Squares.

We will now write some Rhythms on the Board and then play them together.

Draw the dot

When we see the dot, what part of the drum does this tell us to play?

When we see the X , how do we play that?
