Pass Two Large Balls Around the Circle
- Receive, Bounce, Pass, Synchronize The Bounces
About:
In the world of music, cueing starts, stops, dynamics, and even nuance
is an important part of playing together. In classic music this is often very
subtle- the wave of a conductors baton, the lift of the violin. In rock music
this cueing is far more dramatic, with lead guitarist jumps, or drummers drum
sticks clicked over the head.
It all comes down to giving clear signal so that players can work together to
create a shared result.
In human social relationships cueing is happening all the time.
Messages need to be given, and received.
"I am in distress and need help."
"I want to hang out"
"I don't want to be bothered now."
"Pay attention to what I am saying."
"I am only joking"
Purpose:
Contact, Cooperation, Coordination particularly with peers / other students.
Sending and Receiving cues with a partner, in this case the cue is about bouncing the balls so that they hit the ground at the same time.
The main cue that we are focusing here is, 'I am ready to bounce with you'
A key piece of this cue is the anacruxis. This is the lift before the down beat.
Directions:
Do this after the group is good with Passing A Large Ball Around The Circle- Receive, Bounce, Pass.
Students need to be able to bounce a large ball one time and catch it, and to pass it the next person in the circle in a good way. If they can't they won't be able to attend to the point of this game, which is , attending to another and synchronizing a bounce with them particularly the cueing.
Two students across the circle from each other receive the balls. They need to
look at each other, raise the balls together and bounce so that both balls hit
the ground at the same time.
This cueing can be done non verbally through movement and gesture or verbally
saying "Ready, Set , Go", or "One, To, Three".
This can be a good exercise to let group members try different approaches and
then evaluate together how well they worked.

Glitches:
- Neither student pays attention to the other of the cue to bounce.
- Ask each "how did you know when partner was going to bounce the ball?"
- Take over the problem
Next Exercise:
Pass an instrument around the room- play a particular 'piece' such as pluck each string on a ukulele.
