Roll - Large Ball - Sensei - Student
Roll a large ball to student, they them roll it back to you.
Purpose:
Make Contact with another.
Help a student experience that they can trust the teaching of the sensei.
Develop Executive Function- take a specific action with purpose and clarity rather than doing something from impulsivity or not doing any thing. In other words to "get ready", "aim", "fire/do an action" as opposed to "fire/take an impulsive action" then "clean up the mess from not considering the consequences of the action".
Learn to cooperate. Work together to accomplish the goal
Embodied organized action.>
Learn to give and receive clear non verbal signals.
Directions:
First model this with an assistant.
Students can either have their feet apart or sit crisscross. If the student sits another way, the ball will probably hit their foot, knee of clothing.
Catch/trap/stop the ball. Then roll it back.
Show the difference between pushing with the hands on the top of the ball vs having hands on the .bottom of the ball. When the hands are on the bottom of the ball, the ball will leave the ground and pop up in the air.
Make sure the assistants model catching the ball then rolling it back. Some students want to push it back with out catching it.
Make sure student has feet, eyes and hands ready before rolling it. They need to give an "Im here and I'm ready" cue. This establishes contact.
Celebrate successes.
Note in this video, the student initially doesn't trap the ball. With her last pass she both traps the ball and roll the ball with her hands more on top of the ball.
Glitches:
- Student doesn't make orienting eye contact
- Use your fingers point to your eyes and their eyes
- Student does not trap the ball, but automatically pushes is back
- Show the child trapping the ball. If they still don't do it, then move the childs hand to trap the ball
- If it is refusal to follow directions, have dragon 'take over the problem'
- Student places hands under the ball and thus tosses or bounces the ball up in the air.
-
Show the difference of bounce and roll. Insist on roll.
To roll the ball, the student needs to put their hand on the top of the ball. If they put it in the middle or lower part of the ball, it will leave the ground.
Place the students hands on top of the ball and do the push movement together. -
You can go on to another student, have them watch, thencome back to this student. "How did X hold hiser hands?"
"Show me". - The ball goes off course.
- You can shorten the distance.
- Give the student time to experiment. Acknowledge the goodness of doing an experiment. Its about learning not just getting it right.
- Use a different size ball.
- Other students can't manage themselves while they wait for their turn
- Acknowledge and celebrate the students who are managing themselves.
- Take over the Problem
- Give the students a job- have them make a moderate sound like 'Zoooom' while the ball is rolling.
