Rhythm Layer Cake

About:

This is a wonderful structure because is allows each person to make up their own part and relate it to the whole. It provides a clear structure so that those parts are generally heard because they come in one at a time. Rhythmic layer cake allows the group to jam freely and gives enough structure so that the group doesn't just get lost in chaos.

Purpose of this lesson:

Prerequisites:

Call and Echo- so student is capable of coming up with a pattern on the spot.
Conducting Endings
Mover in the Center -Stability vs. Instability students clearly understand the difference between stable and unstable rhythms.

Directions:

One person is going to start a foundation beat. This beat should be rather simple and especially be stable. (give examples of this, boom chick works well. Also give examples of unstable beats.) Once that person is playing, the next person in the circle adds a different beat that fits in with what is being played. Then the next person enters.. and so on until everyone is playing. Then the leader, who started the beat ends the piece by:
